Background. Artificial intelligence (AI) is being introduced into various aspects of our daily activities, including education. The study of foreign languages, as part of the educational system, is also influenced by new developing technologies. This phenomenon is sure to be an achievement and progress. However in some cases the use of artificial intelligence technologies by students does not speed up the process of teaching and learning a foreign language, but, on the contrary, complicates and slows it down. It is obvious that the prerequisites for this are rooted in the wrong approach to the use of modern educational technologies in the educational process. Purpose. The aim of the study is to analyze the use of AI in linguistic education in a non-linguistic (medical) university, to identify the reasons for the lack of its effective educational impact, and to propose solutions. Materials and methods. The work used a comprehensive research methodology combining theoretical approaches, including analysis of literature on the topic of the study, generalization and classification, as well as empirical methods, such as survey, analysis of local pedagogical experience and pedagogical observation. Results. As the conducted study shows, at the current stage of development of methods of teaching foreign languages in a non-linguistic university, AI technologies do not contribute to increasing the efficiency of the educational process. The study demonstrates the need to clearly separate the areas of teaching and learning in linguistic education and consider the use of AI separately in each of these areas. Artificial intelligence technologies in language learning and teaching from the teacher's side are a valuable tool that makes the educational process more efficient and energy-saving. However, in teaching from the student's position, devoid of a motivating component, the use of artificial intelligence does not have a learning effect and does not allow students to fully assimilate and process the educational material. The author suggests ways to overcome this situation. Practical implications. The results obtained can be used in the practical work of teachers and will allow turning AI into a full-fledged educational and effective teaching tool.
