Although the term is widely used in scholarship, definitions remain fragmented and partly overlap with social skills, communicative competence, and digital competence. An additional challenge is to align classical socialization models with the platform‑mediated social life of students.</p> <p>Purpose. This paper aims to reconstruct the evolution of the concept of social competence and to propose an integrative definition applicable to both offline and online educational contexts.</p> <p>Materials and methods. The review draws on Russian and international research on socialization, competency‑based education, socio‑emotional development, digital socialization, and digital citizenship, as well as national standards regulating learning outcomes in general education. We employed an integrative review design combined with definitional and component analysis and systematic model comparison. Conceptual mapping was used to identify stages of conceptual evolution and to synthesize a structural model of social competence.</p> <p>Results. The results demonstrate: shift from behavioural social‑skills models to competency‑based and digital frameworks; justified integrative definition of social competence as a personality‑and‑activity formation with four components; structural model emphasizing effectiveness and social acceptability of interaction across offline and online settings; and the positioning of SEL ideas in the Russian context through national standards that specify personal and meta‑subject outcomes. Overall, social competence as a pedagogical category requires component‑based instructional design and the systematic inclusion of digital‑ethical regulation and risk management.</p>
<trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>Обоснование. Единый вывод: педагогическая категория «социальная компетентность» требует компонентного проектирования и включения цифровых и этических регуляторов и риск‑менеджмента в образовательный дизайн.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>социальная компетентность</kwd><kwd>педагогическая категория</kwd><kwd>компетентностный подход</kwd><kwd>социально-эмоциональное развитие</kwd><kwd>цифровая социализация</kwd><kwd>цифровое гражданство</kwd><kwd>ФГОС</kwd><kwd>обучающиеся</kwd></kwd-group><kwd-group xml:lang="en"><kwd>social competence</kwd><kwd>pedagogical category</kwd><kwd>competency-based education</kwd><kwd>socio-emotional development</kwd><kwd>digital socialization</kwd><kwd>digital citizenship</kwd><kwd>national educational standards</kwd><kwd>students</kwd></kwd-group><funding-group/></article-meta></front><body></body><back><ref-list><ref id="B1"><label>1.</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Andreeva, G.
