Purpose. The purpose of this article is to substantiate the theoretical and methodological foundations of the service learning technology and the possibility of its application in the training of social workers based on the analysis of domestic and foreign works.

Research methods. To achieve this goal, a search was conducted and subsequent content analysis of domestic and foreign publications in the databases Elibrary, Semantic Scholar, Researchgate.net . The content analysis was aimed at studying existing approaches to defining the concept of “Service Learning” and the areas of application of this technology, in particular in Social Work Education, as well as identifying relevant theoretical and methodological foundations for the professional training of university students.

The results of the study shows that service learning is a pedagogical technology that combines community service (activity) with academic learning, promoting students’ reflection, critical thinking, and creative solutions to social problems. The paradigm shift in higher education in the field of social work during the transition to service learning is due to the goal of training specialists who are socially responsible, active citizens, able to demonstrate their independence, possess professional skills in the field of social work, based on experience and leading to positive social changes in society. The theoretical and methodological basis of service learning in the training of social workers is a practice-oriented approach, a personality-developing approach, and an environmental approach.
